Mussel Storage and Preparation

As with most seafood, for optimal taste it is best to use mussels as soon as possible after purchase. You may place the bag of mussels in the refrigerator until ready to use. To insure maximum shelf life, store in the coolest part of the refrigerator and cover with a damp cloth. The mussels may be held up to seven days at refrigerator temperature.

When ready to use, rinse the mussels under cold running water. Some live mussels may be open, a gentle tap should cause the shell to close. Discard any that remain open. Cut off any beards that remain attached, as close as possible to the shell.
